WoW Sets Standard for Subscription MMO's

If you read the main IncGamers site then you’ll know that Cryptic Studios’ Champions Online will be going free to play next year.
Today on the Escapist, Cryptic Studios Jack Emmert has commented on the move to a free-to-play model and added that he thinks Star Wars: The Old Republic is the only upcoming MMORPG that has a good shot at taking on WoW and making a subscription model work. He added: “World of Warcraft has pretty much sucked the oxygen out of the subscription market and kind of devoured it itself.”
WoW has really seen off the competition since it’s launch. Lord of the Rings Online, Global Agenda and DDO, to namea few off the top of my head, have already moved to a free-to-play model.
It’s becoming more apparent that new MMOs are still finding the market tough. and free-to-play with micro-transaction support is one of the few ways to survive.
